 Job Hunting Sucks
Graduated in December, after 6 and a half years. 1 semester taking just 1 class, next semester took off... then my internship on campus (for free) last fall.
Not many IT openings for new graduates down here in the Southeast unless I move up to Atlanta. Which, I have no family/friends in the area, so it's not like I can go there to begin looking, left with just online mainly.
I got a phone call Monday late afternoon, about a job opportunity. Said he got my resume off the school's career services/job search thing..... and confirmed my email to see if I was interested. Sent me a job desc Monday evening. I started replying back, not knowing what they want in particular, just a broad idea. Invites me up for an interview, and tries to book it for today.....
I got him to reschedule for Thursday, but at 1pm. Now I'm stuck waking up at 6am'ish so I can hit the road by 7:30am. ~4.5 hour drive, and my friend said I might be hitting a small bit of rush hour for lunch time. I haven't waken up before 10am in quite some time, and lately been sleeping in until 12-1pm. This sucks

 Re: Job Hunting Sucks
Yea it totally blows. I'm finally starting at a new place on the 22nd. I've been looking on and off since last fall. I interviewed twice on the phone and twice in person over the span of about 2 months for this job
Best advice is to just apply to places every day. You can setup searches at sites like Dice, Beyond, CareerBuilder, Monster, etc and have them email you new jobs everyday. Just apply everywhere. Flood the job boards. I got to the point I was only submitting my resume without a cover letter to every job that I was remotely qualified for.
Luckly I got picked up by a fairly large international stock trading company to work as a Data Center Operations Systems Administrator (windows/linux/hardware). That was after 3 years of paying my dues in a shithole job but at least I got that to put on my resume.
The funny thing is I don't think I would have been able to get the job if I didn't fuck around with our servers.

If I remember correctly, at your current crap job, you're usually playing PC games or on Vent... Sounds pretteh good to me.

 Re: Job Hunting Sucks
I've been applying around for about a year now. Best job search site I've found so far is http://www.indeed.com. Now if only I can find a better job with a more stable schedule, I can finish my damn degree.

 Re: Job Hunting Sucks
So I still don't know why these guys pulled my resume for the position of Datawarehouse Developer when I have almost no programming skills. After talking to the initial recruiter, it seemed to be alrite, but the person asking for all my technical skills made me feel like a complete dumbass for even coming to be interviewed.
But only after ~5hours of completing my interview, I have an email for an offer for a position as a Project Engineer.
But.... they want a confirmed response by Monday Morning..... they want me to start work in Atlanta on the 22nd if I accept. They're located in the middle of Buckhead, probably the richest area in atlanta...............
After ~6-8 weeks of training, I will probably be relocated elsewhere within 2-3 months, making it even more impossible to find a decent place to live.
Not to mention I would have to accept before I even have a chance to look around at places

 Re: Job Hunting Sucks
ยท Your base salary shall be $40,000 per year. Additionally you will also be eligible for our QPLC (Quarterly Performance Linked Compensation) program, valued at $2,000 per year.
Mon-Fri 9am-6pm 2 weeks vacation 5 personal days for under 5 years employment, then bumped to 10 and 15 next 5 year increments
Pretty nice benefit package......
But after thinking it through, I don't know shit about software development/programming, and I doubt I would want to be stuck in this as a career. I wouldn't mind the travel if it wasn't so rushed. And that salary in Atlanta, especially in that area, seems extremely low.
So prob gonna just decline, and collect an expense check for making the trip.
On a side note, has anyone ever filled out one of these? Them doing reimbursement for flights/hotel/travel for an interview I get, but $.505 per mile for my mileage???? That right there is ~$255, added to the $51 of gasoline, and ~$10 meal. $300 just to go to an interview, maybe I just haven't been in the business world much, but that seems pretty crazy. When I traveled to Charleston for an interview, they sent me a $100 expense check, and that was 2.5 hours each way.
